Get ready House of the Dragon fans – season 2 has officially set sail.
In a new update, HBO announced that the second season of the hit Game of Thrones prequel series is in production, with stars including Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith and Olivia Cooke set to return.
However, that wasn’t the only treat that the entertainment company served up for fans, as the firm also released a first look at the upcoming new episodes.
A behind-the-scenes shot was unveiled, showing the back of the fearsome Iron Throne in the Great Hall at King’s Landing, a regal seat made entirely of painfully sharp swords.
The photo showed several members of the crew hard at work on set, all wearing protective facemasks to continue to safeguard during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Considering House of the Dragon is centred around different factions of the Targaryen clan vying for the Iron Throne to rule the Seven Kingdoms, the shot that HBO chose to announce the news is definitely ominous indeed.
Several fans could barely contain their excitement over season two, even if there’s going to be a significant amount of time to wait until it comes out on Sky and NOW in the UK.
‘Can’t wait for my baby Rhaenyra to burn down all of King’s Landing,’ one person tweeted, backing Emma’s Rhaenyra in the civil war brewing within House Targaryen.
‘I prayed for times like this,’ someone else remarked, while another wrote: ‘LET’S GOOOO!!’
However, others expressed fresh upset over the fact that Milly Alcock, who played the younger version of Rhaenyra Targaryen, won’t be returning.
‘When season 2 premieres and #she isn’t there 😕,’ one fan of the 23-year-old actor said, sharing a gif of her in character as the princess-turned-queen.
In September last year, it appeared to be confirmed that neither Milly nor Emily Carey, who played the younger version of Olivia’s Alicent Hightower, would be reprising their roles in the second season.
However, co-creator Ryan Condal appeared to leave the door open for potential comebacks, he shared in an interview with Variety.
Saying that the younger Rhaenyra and Alicent ‘are not a part of the story that we’re telling yet’, he added that House of the Dragon could be ‘a little bit more fancy’ in comparison to Game of Thrones when it came to potential flashbacks.
‘There are things that we haven’t fully sorted out. I’m not closing the door on anything. So there, how’s that for an answer?’ he added.
House of the Dragon is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
