The fire is almost out—for now. In a recent podcast appearance, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal revealed that only 20 days remain before Season 3 wraps filming. As fans eagerly await the return to Westeros, behind-the-scenes updates hint at a production process as intricate as the realm itself.

Quick read:

  •  20 days left to finish Season 3 filming
  •  Buck unit now active for dragon scenes
  •  Previs tech guides every shot precisely

The Buck Unit Signals the Final Stretch

In the latest episode of his podcast, The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, Condal confirmed that the “Buck unit” has come back online—a clear sign that filming is nearing its end. This specialized team is responsible for finalizing complex scenes, especially those involving dragons and large-scale battles. Once the Buck unit activates, it’s essentially the cleanup crew of production, ensuring every shot aligns with the previsualization (previs) plan.

Previs now includes fully animated sequences, similar to video game storyboards, allowing directors to choreograph every movement, camera angle, and lighting cue before shooting begins. Even the way a dragon flaps its wings or casts a shadow is meticulously mapped out.

Dragons, Animatics, and Precision Planning

The Buck unit’s role goes beyond logistics—it’s the backbone of House of the Dragon’s cinematic spectacle. By running character-by-character simulations, the team ensures that dragons, armies, and environments move in harmony. This tech-driven approach allows production units to “roll in” based on scene complexity, saving time and maximizing visual impact.

With just a few days left until filming concludes, fans can expect post-production to kick off soon. If Season 3’s dragon sequences are anything like what’s been teased, Westeros is about to get a whole lot hotter.
