Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has officially started production, and fans are eagerly keeping an eye on filming for any clues about the show.
Matt Smith (Prince Daemon Targaryen) and Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) are set to star in the series, which follows the royals centuries before the events of Game of Thrones.
We’ve already spotted the duo looking completely the part, as they filmed in Cornwall, sporting platinum blonde locks that are sure to remind fans of Emilia Clarke’s character Daenerys Targaryen.
It’s the first of several proposed spin-offs of the wildly popular fantasy series based on the novels by George RR Martin – but fans will have a while to wait, as it’s currently set for release in 2022.
So, in the meantime, here’s everything we know from filming so far.
Everything that’s happened with House of the Dragon production
April 21Film crews spotted in cornwall
Cornwall locals spotted film crews and lorries emblazoned with the Warner Bros logo in the English countryside.
Nothing had been confirmed, but crew members were spotted assembling a stone arch that wouldn’t have been out of place in the Seven Kingdoms.
April 26Production officially begins
The show officially confirmed production was underway with a snap of the cast members attending a socially distanced read-through.
Subsequent tweets introduced the star-studded cast, including Emma as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as The Sea Snake and Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen.
Matt also made an appearance as Prince Daemon Targaryen, closely followed by Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.
April 27CREWS LAUNCH BOATS INTO SEA AT CORNWALL
After the confirmation, early cinematography was seen taking place at Holywell Bay in Cornwall.
Crew members were seen launching boats into the sea, with experts showing what appeared to actors in wetsuits how to get to grips with the equipment.
April 28Matt and Emma get into character
We’ve been given our first glimpse at Matt and Emma in character, as they filmed at Holywell Bay.
They donned cloaks as they were seen deep in conversation for a scene, with both sporting the signature Targaryen blonde locks.
April 28Filming delayed after crew member rescued
Just days into production, the show was hit with an unexpected delay when a crew member had to be rescued from the rising tide in a different location to where Emma and Matt were seen filming.
According to reports, the staff member was driving to a causeway but got stuck in the water on his way up to the mount when the incident happened.
It appeared all staff made it out of the incident unharmed.
Filming looks set to continue over the next few weeks, with Matt and Emma leading the cast.
House of the Dragon will be adapted from the events in author George RR Martin’s book Fire and Blood, which ends with a huge battle nicknamed The Dance of the Dragons – caused by an inter-family civil war.
Matt and Emma’s transformations
Doctor Who star Matt is starring as Prince Daemon Targaryen, the uncle and husband of Emma’s character, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Prince Daemon is the most experienced warrior of his time, and brother to King Viserys I Targaryen.
Emma’s character, Princess Rhaenyra, is the first-born child of King Viserys I Targaryen.
At the age of eight she was made her father’s heir and grew up expecting to become the first ruling Queen of Westeros.
It’s not the only prequel in the works either, as a series adaptation of George RR Martin’s novellas Tales of Dunk and Egg is also in the works.
Danaerys actress Emilia recently spoke out about the spin-offs, telling Entertainment Weekly: ‘Godspeed, everyone! You do you, you go, Glenn Coco!
‘It’s just inevitable. I wish you all the best, it’s gonna be whatever it will be, but of course they’re doing more.
‘You can’t create something that big and not have people go, “And? What else? This is really good! Let’s do loads more!”’
