As House of the Dragon continues to unravel the brutal Targaryen civil war, Queen Rhaenyra finds herself navigating a treacherous political landscape. With her claim to the Iron Throne challenged by Aegon II, she must rely on trusted allies to maintain her position. Emma D’Arcy, who portrays Rhaenyra, recently shed light on the character’s evolving relationships, particularly her reliance on Mysaria, the enigmatic White Worm.

Quick read:

  • Emma D’Arcy reveals that Rhaenyra “can’t survive as a sole agent” and must rely on allies.
  • With Daemon absent, Rhaenyra leans on Mysaria, whose spy network strengthens her position.
  • Season 3 will challenge Rhaenyra’s ability to maintain control as the civil war intensifies.

The Importance of Alliances in Westeros

In a conversation with Gold Derby, D’Arcy explained Rhaenyra’s need for companionship, stating, “She fundamentally can’t survive as a sole agent. She has to pair, and pair really hard. Sonoya Mizuno is totally incredible, and there’s something quite unusual about their relationship.

The friendship and companionship of another woman is unusual. All of Rhaenyra’s tools are designed to enable her to navigate and manipulate a male-dominated world. Those carefully honed skills all suddenly feel like dumb instruments in the face of another woman.”

With Daemon absent for much of Season 2, Rhaenyra turns to Mysaria, whose network of spies proves invaluable in the escalating conflict. Their bond is unique, as Mysaria offers a perspective outside the male-dominated world Rhaenyra has learned to manipulate.

What Lies Ahead for Rhaenyra?

As Season 3 approaches, Rhaenyra’s ability to maintain control will be tested like never before. With Daemon’s return and the looming Battle of the Gullet, her strategic prowess and Mysaria’s intelligence network may not be enough to secure victory. The Dance of the Dragons is far from over, and Rhaenyra must continue forging alliances to survive the chaos ahead.
