Jon Snow has been a key figure throughout Game of Thrones and he is likely to have a big role in battle against the Night King.

After being looked down on as Ned Stark’s bastard son, Jon went on to follow in the footsteps of his uncle Benjen and join the Night’s Watch.

From there he climbed the ranks to become Lord Commander despite numerous setbacks, and he wasn’t even brought back to life after being stabbed repeatedly by his Night’s Watch brothers.

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding him has been the truth of who is mother is and why it has been kept a secret for so long.

The final episode of season 7 saw Bran give fans the answers that they have been waiting for, but it could be unfortunate news for Jon and his alliance Daenerys Targayren.

How is Jon Snow related to Daenerys Targaryen?

It was revealed in season 7 of Game of Thrones that Jon Snow is actually the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.

Rhaegar is the older brother of Viserys and Daenarys, meaning that she is Jon Snow’s aunt by blood.

Jon was concieved during Robert’s Rebellion when Robert Baratheon, Jon Arryn and Ned Stark all fought to overthrow the Targaryens.

Lyanna and Rhaegar were in love with each other, despite most people believing that Rhaegar had kidnapped and raped her.

While they were in hiding they got married in secret, cementing their relationship and legitimising Jon Snow as a Targaryen.

Ned Stark found Lyanna shortly after the birth of her son, she asked Ned to protect him and revealed that his name was Aegon Targaryen.

As Rhaegar was initially the heir to the Iron Throne after Aerys II, Jon would be the new rightful heir as he is his only living child.

Game of Thrones season 8 starts on Sky Atlantic and Now TV at 2am and again at 9pm on Monday 15 April.
