Game of Thrones was, undeniably, one of the biggest shows of the time.
Its first spin-off series, House of the Dragon, has finally flown onto Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW – already capturing attention as it deep dives into the history of House Targaryen.
It’s far from the only wander into Westeros that has been announced or hinted at over recent years.
Naturally, a lot of information has been kept close to the chests of TV studios and Thrones creator George RR Martin, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get all hyped up. Right?
Here’s a look at the Game of Thrones spin-offs we know are being developed…
What Game of Thrones HBO spin-offs are in the works?
There are currently five spin-off TV series, either airing now or listed on Game of Thrones executive producer Vince Gerardis’s website as future projects.
There’s also one Broadway show in the works, as well as three animated series.
House of the Dragon
The first Game of Thrones spin-off is HBO’s House of the Dragon.
Obviously, it’s not in the works – as it’s already out. It’s garnered plenty of positive reviews since being released in late August 2022, with our reviewer dubbing it a ‘reminder of why we loved‘ the original series.
The show focuses on House Targaryen, around 200 years before the events shown in GoT.
Paddy Considine stars as King Viserys Targaryen, with Matt Smith as his brother Prince Daemon – plus Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra, Viserys’ daughter, at different ages.
The Tales of Dunk and Egg
There’s an in-the-works adaption of George RR Martin’s three Dunk and Egg novellas on the cards.
The stories follow Dunk – aka Ser Duncan the Tall, the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard – and Egg, the future king Aegon V Targaryen.
It’s another prequel, based 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire or, as TV fans will know, Game of Thrones.
Variety was first to report the spin-off in January 2021, saying it was in the early development stages with HBO.
George RR Martin later confirmed its existence, and that it was seemingly going ahead, writing on his blog in March 2022: ‘I need to write more of the Dunk and Egg novellas, tell the rest of their stories, especially since there’s a television series about them in development.’
In a June 2022 blog, Martin shared two possible titles for the series: The Hedge Knight, or Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
SNOW – aka the untitled Jon Snow project
George RR Martin confirmed a series about Jon Snow was in development with HBO in a June 2022 blog.
He wrote simply: ‘Yes, there is a Jon Snow show in development. The Hollywood Reporter story was largely correct… Our working title for the show is SNOW.’
We don’t know too much about it yet, but we do know that actor Kit Harington was the one to pitch the idea.
Martin continued: ‘It seems as though Emilia Clarke has already mentioned that SNOW was Kit’s idea in a recent interview.
‘So that part is out. Yes, it was Kit Harington who brought the idea to us. I cannot tell you the names of the writers / showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.’
Presumably, this would be a sequel to Game of Thrones – following Jon after the major events and battles of series eight – alas nothing has been confirmed as yet.
Though we have explored how House of the Dragon could set up a possible Jon Snow spin-off.
Nine Voyages of the Sea Snake
In March 2021, Deadline reported that three prequels were being developed – of which Nine Voyages was said to be the most ‘fully formed’.
The project now appears on Startling Inc’s website – aka the site of Game of Thrones executive producer Vince Gerardis – as an in-development series with HBO.
Nine Voyages will follow the story of Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Snake.
Lord of the Tides and head of House Velaryon, Corlys was known as one of the greatest seafarers of the Seven Kingdoms and had close ties with the Targaryen family.
Specifically, he was the husband of Rhaenys, and was hand to Queen Rhaenyra.
Interestingly, Lord Corlys appears in House of the Dragon, played by It’s A Sin and Small Axe star Steve Toussaint.
10,000 Ships
Also listed on the website of Startling Inc, and previously reported by Deadline, is the Game of Thrones prequel 10,000 Ships.
The show is believed to be focused on legendary warrior Princess Nymeria – the founder of Dorne, and ancestor of House Martell – whose story is so fabled that Arya Stark named her direwolf after her.
It’s thought this show would be set around a millennium before the main events of Game of Thrones.
And not for TV… Harrenhal: A Song Of Ice and Fire on Broadway
Back in 2021, there was speculation around a mystery project listed by Startling Inc, called ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’.
It was soon confirmed to be a stage show, coming to Broadway, about which Martin said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter: ‘The seeds of war are often planted in times of peace.
‘Few in Westeros knew the carnage to come when highborn and smallfolk alike gathered at Harrenhal to watch the finest knights of the realm compete in a great tourney, during the Year of the False Spring.
‘It is a tourney oft referred during HBO’s Game of Thrones, and in my novels, A Song of Ice & Fire… and now, at last, we can tell the whole story… on the stage.’
In 2022, the play is listed on the site as ‘Harrenhal, A Song of Ice and Fire stage play’.
Three Game of Thrones animated series
Yep, there are three whole animated series are in the works.
One of the animated series will explore the Golden Empire of Ti Ti, a territory never seen on the original series and thought to be inspired by Imperial China.
Nothing has been revealed about the other two series at time of writing.
It’s worth noting that these series will not be suitable for children – they will contain adult content that mirrors the live action series.
Sorry, kids.
