I don’t know about you, but I’m a serial rewatcher.
I have no idea how I find the time, when there are so many new TV shows sprouting up left, right and centre, but I absolutely love revisiting programmes that bring me comfort, or make me feel inspired.
If I’m in the mood for a thrilling rewatch, it’ll be a drama like Lost or Game of Thrones. If I want to feel all warm and fuzzy inside, it’ll be Friends, New Girl or Schitt’s Creek. Or if I just want to marvel at a TV masterpiece, I’ll opt for Fleabag or Arcane. The list goes on.
We asked Metro readers to share their favourite shows that they could rewatch forever, ones that they never get bored revisiting.
As always, our trusted readers didn’t disappoint.

Schitt’s Creek
While Schitt’s Creek first launched in 2015, it reached stratospheric levels of popularity after Netflix picked the series up from its third season two years later.
The heartwarming show about a wealthy family who lose their fortune and are forced to live in a humble town that the dad Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) bought for his son David (Dan Levy) as a joke ended in April 2020, at a time when the world was grappling with the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The sitcom became a comfort-watch for millions of people around the globe, and fans were heartbroken when it was recently announced that Catherine O’Hara, who played the incomparably unique matriarch Moira Rose, had died aged 71.
Metro reader Tracey Elder chose Schitt’s Creek as her ultimate comfort watch, describing it as ‘so loving and heartfelt, but also crazy funny’.
With memorable scenes including David and Moira trying and failing to understand what ‘folding in cheese’ means, to Alexis Rose (Annie Murphy) performing her earworm pop song A Little Bit Alexis, we couldn’t agree more.
Schitt’s Creek is available to stream on Netflix.
Call the Midwife
Call the Midwife is an institution on British TV, having been going for 14 years… and counting. Now in its 15th season, the period drama pulls at the heartstrings and tells important storylines in topics including teen pregnancy, infertility and adoption.
Metro reader Helen Etheridge described the series as her ‘go-to watch’ – while also including a jaw-dropping anecdote about a health scare she suffered while watching during the festive period.
‘Call the Midwife is my go-to watch. Although my children wouldn’t agree as I had a heart attack one year on Christmas Day watching it. But I would still watch it and I’m lucky enough to be here to tell the tale,’ she shared.
Hilary Woodcock said that she calls it ‘my happy programme’, while Su Reed added: ‘No gratuitous sex and swearing, just well written.’
Call the Midwife is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
Fargo
Fargo has boasted a star-studded cast ever since it premiered 12 years ago, with actors including the likes of Billy Bob Thornton, Kirsten Dunst, Ewan McGregor, Lamorne Morris and Juno Temple starring in the anthology series.
Metro reader Robin Brown chose Fargo as the programme they would keep watching forever and always – although they added that when they tune in for each season, they can never work out how the plot’s going to unfold. The sign of a well-written, unpredictable crime drama!
‘Intelligent writing plus I can never figure out where it’s going,’ Robin wrote.
‘I sure do miss those Sunday night episodes, and with their stellar casts. Fargo was pretty much unbeatable.’
Fargo is available to stream on Prime Video.
Only Fools and Horses
It’s been more than 20 years since the final episode of Only Fools and Horses aired, and its legacy has endured.
When we asked our readers to share their most cherished comfort watches that they could keep coming back to, this series – starring David Jason as Del Boy and Nicholas Lyndhurst as Rodney – was one of the most popular answers.
‘Only Fools And Horses, I watch at least one a day. Never gets old,’ Andy Staves commented, to which Ashlee Grindell agreed.
Michaela Harris revealed that she frequently turns it on when her husband goes to sleep, in addition to other sitcoms such as The Royle Family and The Vicar of Dibley. ‘Just something lighthearted but they never get old!’ she shared.
Only Fools and Horses is available to stream on ITVX.
Game of Thrones
Before we begin… Yes, we know that the final season of Game of Thrones was controversial, that some fans hated it so much that they claimed it ruined the show.
In my opinion, that’s hogwash. Regardless of the final season – which did not end in the way that I would have chosen had I been in charge – Game of Thrones remains, and always will remain, one of the best TV shows ever made. There, I said it. And several Metro readers agreed.
‘Watching it too many times!!!’ Vicky Owens declared, while Vicky Greaves said that she especially enjoys the scenes with Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), a fine choice for a favourite character.
Sharron Papaccio remarked that if she turns on the TV and there’s an episode of Thrones on, ‘I can watch it to the end.’ Fortunately, for her, the spin-off series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is currently airing weekly and going down a treat with diehard viewers.
Game of Thrones is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
Golden Girls
To sum it up nicely, Golden Girls is golden TV, with many people – and various listicles floating around on the internet – hailing it as one of the best shows of all time.
Brian Robinson, a rising Metro fan, selected it as his go-to comfort watch, while Dorothy Ricord also shared that she enjoys watching re-runs of the programme. ‘Wholesome and funny but also actually covers important topics,’ Laird Richard Foster also summarised.
Who’s your favourite Golden Girl?
In 2020, the BBC published an article titled: ‘The Golden Girls: The most treasured TV show ever,’ in which culture journalist Arwa Haider wrote: ‘The original premise, and its star quartet, still feels exceptional: here was a prime-time sitcom that revelled in its focus on four female senior-citizen housemates.
‘The Golden Girls was fiercely funny, unashamedly soppy, brazenly glamorous (with an abundance of ‘80s shoulder pads and hairspray), and bravely outspoken – and there has never been a better time to treasure its legacy.’
Golden Girls is available to stream on Disney Plus.
Dead To Me
Of all the TV shows mentioned on this list, Dead To Me might be the least known – but trust me, it’s well worth the watch.
Originally premiering in 2019, the black comedy stars Christina Applegate as Jen Harding, a woman whose husband is killed in a hit-and-run, and Linda Cardellini as Judy Hale, who enters Jen’s life as a new friend.
I won’t go into the details of what happens next for fear of spoilers galore – but the twists in this brilliant show are truly jaw-dropping and will have you on the edge of your seat.
‘I always watch it in hard times and think if they can get through that I can get through whatever it is I’m going through,’ top Metro fan Cameron Fell wrote in their recommendation.
Dead to Me is available to stream on Netflix.
