Two episodes in, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already won over fans with its unlikely hero and distinctly different tone from previous Game of Thrones series. With a second season already in development, showrunner Ira Parker has expressed hope that he will get the chance to continue exploring this more grounded, character-driven world in an interview with Esquire.

The new Game of Thrones prequel is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series, which spans three novellas. Season one adapts the first story, The Hedge Knight, while the second season is expected to draw from the follow-up. Beyond that, the show’s future remains uncertain as of now.
Speaking to Esquire, Parker shared that he wants to continue telling more of Dunk and Egg’s story. He said: “We’ve been shooting [season 2] every day for the last two weeks. We’ll see how the audience responds and we’ll go from there, but I love these characters and I love these stories so much.” In fact, he is hoping that there will be more than three seasons.

George R.R. Martin has acknowledged that he has been working on additional Dunk and Egg stories, and Ira Parker has said he hopes the author continues, so the series can keep moving forward with more seasons. Parker told Esquire, “I hope George keeps writing these. The truth is—and I’ve pitched this to HBO with a couple very polite eye rolls—I want to do four or five now with Egg as a kid.”
“Then, I want to come back in ten years and do four or five more seasons with Egg the Prince. And with real Dexter [Ansell] and real Peter, just the age that they are at that point. Then, we’ll come back ten years after that and do well, Egg the adult. So, it would be over the course of their lifetime. And mine too,” he added.
So, if Martin follows through with more stories and audience interest remains strong, Parker would be more than happy to continue the series beyond season 2 for as long as he’s able, and allowed, to do so.
