Maisie Williams is pretty much always a hero. Whether she and Sophie Turner are being heroically good friends to each other IRL — shout out to Sophie’s life-saver dress-fixing at the Golden Globes — or she’s just playing Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, she’s pretty much always inspiring us to be our most awesome.
But the new trailer for Netflix’s original movie iBoy, we get to see a softer side of Maisie that might indicate a different kind of courage than we’re used to seeing her evoke as Arya. In iBoy, Maisie portrays Lucy, the best friend of a super-powered kid named Tom. While Lucy doesn’t appear to have superhuman abilities of her own, she bravely talks to her friend Tom after she’s attacked by a gang. In the trailer, we see Lucy tear up as she discusses her attackers. “Never been the victim,” she says, before telling Tom that “no one’s mad at you for not being a hero.” (As HelloGiggles notes, Tom is played by Bill Milner, who played a young Magneto in X-Men: First Class.)
It’s Lucy’s perseverance and desire for justice that appear to inspire Tom to become a vigilante superhero. Well, that and a pretty wild head injury. It’s the gunshot to the head that Tom suffers after Lucy’s attack that leaves him with cellphone shards lodged in his brain, which creates in him what Entertainment Weekly calls a “one part Mr. Robot, one part Green Arrow” superhero. We’re in good hands with this movie, hero-wise. Basically, Tom is a high-tech manipulating hero made for 2017, and Maisie Williams as Lucy is his perfect badass inspiration.
We’re not sure of exactly how Lucy’s story will play out in the movie: will she be a sidekick, her own hero, a love interest, or all of the above? No matter what, we’re certain that this performance will let us see even more of Maisie’s dramatic range. And for that, we’ll be glued to our screens when the movie streams globally on Netflix on January 27th.
