A famous site that was featured in the global TV hit Game of Thrones has been damaged due to the blistering conditions of Storm Isha.

Across the country, people have been receiving warnings about the impact of the storm, which has resulted in severe winds, torrential rain and dangerous, flying debris.

Members of the public have been warned not to venture too close to the sea, while it was announced that an 84-year-old man had died after his car crashed into a fallen tree in Scotland.

In Northern Ireland, the site of the Dark Hedges – an avenue of beech trees in County Antrim that was used as a location in Game of Thrones – has been damaged.

Mervyn Storey, chairman of the Dark Hedges Preservation Trust, said: ‘It looks like there are three trees down.

‘We have had people out since dawn trying to clear the road. There are a number of other trees down in the area as well.’

Mervyn explained that the Dark Hedges road was closed while the work continues, emphasising that the impact of Storm Isha is ‘another blow’ to the site.

‘It proves that the surveys that were carried out last year were worth doing,’ the chairman continued.

‘In fact one of the trees that was healthy has been blown down. It is very sad.’

In November last year, it was reported that several trees from the Dark Hedges site were facing being cut down, after they became a potential ‘risk to the public’.

A statement released by Stormont’s Department of Infrastructure read: ‘An independent specialist survey found that 11 trees, out of a total of 86, are in a poor condition and could pose a potential risk to the public.

‘This decision has not been made lightly and, whilst the amenity value afforded by the corridor of trees is acknowledged, the safety of road users is paramount.’

It was decided that six of the trees would be cut down.

Speaking about the damage that Storm Isha caused to the Dark Hedges, Mervyn said that it had been a ‘very intense storm for a period of time’.

‘Because there has been snow and rain before, the ground around the base of the trees is sodden; when the wind comes they just move,’ he said.

‘It focuses again the need to have something which protects these trees, something to preserve what is left of the Dark Hedges.’

The trees were originally planted to line Bregagh Road to Gracehill House, a property that was built in the 18th century.
