An astonishing cloud formation which was seen over much of Northamptonshire has been compared to The Wall in TV series Game of Thrones.

Hundreds of locals have taken to social media to express their shock after seeing the weather phenomenon, which was seen over the skies of Northampton and Daventry.

The formation looked like a wall, and slowly moved across the county’s skies, bringing with it a blanket of thick cloud.

Brian Hitchenor, 54, from Upton pictured the clouds as they approached his home which he shares with sons Alfie, 8 and Joe, 11.

He described the formation as being like The Wall in popular TV show Game of Thrones.

He said: “Joe noticed it first and Alfie told me there were some strange flat clouds.

“They gradually got nearer but lost the flat top as it came over which took ages.

“There was no rain, it just got a bit overcast.”

The clouds were a form of arcus clouds, known as a shelf cloud.

It is described as a low, horizontal, wedge-shaped arcus cloud which is usually attached to the base of a parent cloud which is higher in the sky.

The cloud often appears to roll through the sky bringing a blanket of more turbulent cloud formation which can often bring rain as well as thunder and lightning.
