I really hope so
This is the most hot take of hot takes by people who really don't know anything about the Tolkien Lore … Listen, I wouldn't come at them if they had been up front about not knowing anything, which is fine, but they're simply talking out their ass with no "Disclaimer".
1.) They're looking at the trees instead of at the forest. There is a three column foundation of "American Geekdom" and that's Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings has a huge, and I mean huge, fanbase. "Game of Thrones" built it organically, but Tolkien properties don't have too, the fanbase is there already, and ready to go to see some redemption. It seems almost tone-deaf that they'd ignore this from the get go. I mean I love Game of Thrones, been a huge fan since 2010, but it's ridiculous to discount the Tolkien Franchise just to lionize GOT.
2.) There is a ton, and I mean, a ton of political intrigue in the backstory of "Lord of the Rings" in terms of "The Silimarillion". There is a ton, a ton, of Court plots and backstabbing in "The SIlmarillion" it's just not fleshed out like it is in "Game of Thrones" it is usually summed up in a paragraph. There is also Incest, especially amongst the Elves. Arwen is like a third generation Incest baby, Her parents and their parents are not as closely related as say Cersei and Jaime, but the High Elves are some kissing cousin mutha'fuckers.
3.) The Handmaiden's Tale is a misnomer of a show. Critics Love it, most people don't watch it. Yes, Hulu came out and said that it was there most watched Streaming show, but without releasing the actual numbers, and the knowledge that Hulu is also one of the least popular streaming services available. So what would be most watched by their standards would most likely be troubling to the verge of cancellation for Netflix, HBO, and Amazonfire. That's like comparing HBO raitings to CW's most popular shows.
4.) and Most importantly, if I remember correctly, it was the site that broke the news that said that Amazon was looking for the "Next Game of Thrones" … I pretty sure that was an editorialized comment on the site's part, not from Amazon itself. There is a lot of dark shit in Tolkien's world, especially during the Wars in The First Age between the Elves and Men versus The Original Dark Lord that is actually depicted and described in the books, but I doubt that the Tolkien Estate would allow them to sexualize the works of the most devout of Catholics.
Once again, this discussion is based solely on "Hot Takes" from hosts who actually don't understand or know what Middle Earth looked like before The Hobbit. Which is fine …
But next time broadcast that shit from the beginning, or get people who do know about it, and not whiff at facts in this poor man's Huffington Post studio.
Do better, WIC.
