Hey guys, SnapJelly here and with game of thrones season 7 just around the corner: Is needle, Arya Stark’s sword realistic? It’s function can be compared to a smallsword or spadroon or even a 18th century or 19th century fencing foil! Unless Maisie Williams does her fancy water dance style, that really can’t be compared to anything…

would it be effective or practical against a longsword though?

  1. Theory: The Needle was made for Arya, when she was younger, from a shortend spadroon, to make a weapon suitable for a girl. It's fast and nimble, perfect for finding small openings in the armor of her opponent.

  2. I'm not a sword expert, though I'd be willing to debate that Needle is a very basic design for a rapier, as rapiers were primary thrusting weapons, though they were double edged and sharpened(from time to time).

  3. one little quibble, the way you describe a parry it sounds like you are talking about stopping the other blade. With a parry you are redirecting the momentum of an opponents blade which does not take nearly as much force as a straight up block.

  4. "What kind of sword is Arya's sword, Needle!?", the people ask.

It's a sword idea thought up by a teenager for his little sister and made by his castle swordsmith. Probably with some modifications to make it "better" based on the smith's knowledge of sword design, which seems to be based on early medieval double-edged swords.

So, he made the forte thicker, either with a triangular or heavily fullered cross-section, and flattened that out into a cutting edge along the foible.

"But that's not a real world period sword design!"

We're talking about a one-off sword made for a 9 year old girl. Who doesn't actually exist. Get a grip.

  5. The thing comes from Bravos and their people, specially the Jaques, people that like to fight at the night, wearing rapiers. I think, in my humble opinion, this is the same concept than is Spanish culture at S XVI finals. People use to wear in their ropes a "ropera" and a dagger or even a "broquel" a small shield to parry with. Without no armor or having a good aim they can kill a guy in one single stroke, hiting in the sapces with less protection, and they use a very famous art called "verdadera destreza" a study of geometric and even filosofal techniques in order to train a perfect swordsman. That knowledge were transported to the famous spanish legions called "Los Tercios" that at their time was the best Infantry for more than one and a half century.

  6. ciao, sorry to ask an OT question. I was wondering if you could talk about sword designs in hisory and what were the main changes (either in technology or tactics) that required the 'current' design to change. many thanks and have a lovely day

  7. If I understood correctly, the small swords ans spadrons were used during the time when guns were allready invented and widely used? So the question is also whether or not it is realistic to have Needle in the world of arming swords and long swords. Besides in the first season of GoT Arya trains with a wooden sword that doesn't resemble Needle at all. Not very smart?
