Lemme explain. We all know that, plot-wise, HBO’s Game of Thrones has blown past A Dance with Dragons, the latest novel in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have said that the show and the books will end up in basically the same place, but in between, a whole lot has changed. Much has been cut and much has been altered, and there’s no really going back.
This week, we ask two questions: 1) With all that’s happened, can we really say with honestly that HBO’s Game of Thrones is an adaptation of Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire? And 2) If we can’t, what does that mean and what does it matter?
