Jaime Lannister and Brienne’s wedding was teased in the Game of Thrones finale.

Fans rejoiced when the pair were reunited on screen and finally hooked up after eight seasons of watching their romance blossom.

However, despite things going well for the much loved duo, Jaime fled to help his sister and former lover Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) when she went to war with Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

His controversial move cost him his life, as he died by his sister’s side but it seems things could have turned out differently if he’d stayed with Brienne (Gwendoline Christie).

While the knight was writing a tribute to her late love during Game of Thrones’ closing scenes, ‘wedding’ music (and the same tune played at Robb Stark’s big day) was heard in the background of the scene, hinting at a possible ceremony.

Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi spoke about the music, and how he hoped fans would pick up on the subtle nuance.

He told Insider: ‘It’s just a hint of what their relationship — if they had stayed together, if he was still alive — what it could have been. What they could have become. That’s why I put that in there.

‘I just threw that in there because I thought it would be a subtle nod to their relationship.’

Ramin continued: ‘When she sits there and she thinks about him and writes down all the things he had done, the second half is the Honour theme, but yeah a big chunk of that [song] is the wedding theme.’

Fans were left disheartened after King’s Landing came crashing down on Jaime, however Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who plays the character) revealed it had to happen.

‘You know he’s gonna go back, and it’s not gonna have a happy ending, is it?’ he told Entertainment Weekly.

‘The hardest thing is the fact they actually find the balance because he ends up with Brienne for a brief moment.’

The star added: ‘He kinda knows himself there is no alternative. For a moment he tricks himself into thinking there is an alternative to his life.

‘As an audience you want him to succeed in taking that different route. You wonder if he’s changed and if he’s escaped this destructive relationship.

‘But you realise he’s so bound by this code of honour of family first, and him and Cersei have a strong bond on every level him.’

Nikolaj stressed: ‘He didn’t say, “Cersei, I don’t love you anymore.” He said, “I’m going to fight for the living because ultimately that’s the only way you and the child you carry can live.”’

Game of Thrones seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
