The biggest upset in Game of Thrones season eight was without a doubt the unjustifiably tame deaths of Cersei and Jaime Lannister, which we were actually told about in season four.
The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones was the most slated episode of all time, until the finale took the unwanted accolade off its hands last night.
In turn, a petition, which has gathered more than 1.3 million signatures and counting demanding season eight was completely rewritten is gathering pace. The upset is partly caused by Cersei (played by Lena Headey), the most vicious character from the entire series, getting the pleasure of dying in her lover’s arms when she should have had her eyes gouged out by The Mountain and head plonked on a spike.
But like all the deaths which came before, we should have seen it coming.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has finally given his first interview since King’s Landing came crashing down on Jaime, and revealed how the scene was foreshadowed way back when.
‘I thought it was a great ending for that couple,’ the Danish-born actor told Entertainment Weekly. ‘She was never going to surrender.
‘And he says it to Bronn (Jerome Flynn) in season four. Bronn asked, “How would you want it to end?” And Jaime says, “In the arms of the woman I love.” So this was foreshadowed and that’s what happened.
‘There’s a least a moment that they do connect: “Just look at me, just look in my eyes, it’s just you and me…”
After Jaime slept with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), he abandoned the knight to return to his sister which didn’t go down well with the Game of Thrones fandom, but according to Nik, it had to be done.
‘You know he’s gonna go back, and it’s not gonna have a happy ending, is it? The hardest thing is the fact they actually find the balance because he ends up with Brienne for a brief moment,’ NIkolaj continued.
‘He kinda knows himself there is no alternative. For a moment he tricks himself into thinking there is an alternative to his life. As an audience you want him to succeed in taking that different route.
‘You wonder if he’s changed and if he’s escaped this destructive relationship. But you realise he’s so bound by this code of honor of family first, and him and Cersei have a strong bond on every level him. He didn’t say, “Cersei, I don’t love you anymore.” He said, “I’m going to fight for the living because ultimately that’s the only way you and the child you carry can live.”
‘He has to go back. She’s all alone. He’s the last one she has. He knows he has to back and try to save her.’
Game of Thrones seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
