James Cameron wants the world to know: he is not making a film about the OceanGate tragedy, where five people died during a failed trip to the bottom of the sea to look at the remains of the Titanic. If you’re wondering why this rumor would ever gain momentum, let us give you some background.
Cameron has long been passionate about the Titanic, as evidenced by his 1997 smash hit Titanic. He’s also visited the wreckage of the doomed ocean liner as recently as 2012.
It comes as no surprise that people sort of assumed he would want to cover the recent tragic events of the OceanGate Titan sub. However, this is not the case.
James Cameron shuts down rumors about doing an OceanGate film
“I don’t respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now,” Cameron wrote on Twitter. “I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, now will I ever be.
On June 18, the Titan sub operated by OceanGate imploded and killed onboard during a trip to the remains of the Titanic. Given that Cameron has been down to the site himself, he understands what being that deep underwater in an enclosed vessel feels like. If anyone gets what it might have been like there, it’s him, so I understand the anger.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this rumor about James Cameron doing the movie was started by UK publication The Sun. But now we’ve heard, plain and clear, that James Cameron is not doing a movie about OceanGate, and he never will. This doesn’t mean that someone else isn’t going to jump at the opportunity, so we’ll just have to sit tight and see which studio/streamer it will be. As for Cameron, he has his hands full with the Avatar franchise.
