From the get-go, the Game of Thrones book and TV series sprung jaw-dropping surprises as key characters lost their heads and plotlines took turns fans never thought possible.
Now a new theory has fans in a whirl over whether or not Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) — the heir to the Iron Throne — had a secret twin.
The character battled legions of enemies to overthrow his one-time love Daenerys Targaryen, and one avid reader of the book series — a Song of Fire and Ice — has put forward an astonishing theory regarding Snow’s true heritage.
Not only is he the son of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, he may have had a secret twin. The compelling thought makes room for an enthralling King of the North sibling rivalry.
The theory comes from Redditor drop_top_minivan, and suggests readers overlooked a juicy detail about a new character introduced in book five.
The theory goes that the character Young Griff is actually the long-lost son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Jon Snow’s secret twin.
‘When Ned [Stark] entered the Tower of Joy he found a bloodied Lyanna but instead of only finding Jon alone he also found Young Griff. He took Jon to The North since he was the northern looking one and left Griff with Howland Reed,’ the Reddit user wrote.
‘After that, I don’t know if Howland gave the baby to Varys or to Jon Connington or something like that. Is it a plausible theory?’
Many fans of the medieval fantasy epic think it’s could be just the type of wheeze series writer George RR Martin would do.
‘That’d be pretty crazy and kind of interesting,’ wrote Reddit user erx98.
‘I like that theory. Young Griff and Jon being twins would be interesting,’ a second Redditor said. Another commenter added that maybe the series contains hidden triplets. ‘Why stop there? Maybe, Jon Snow, Young Griff and Daenerys are triplets?’
But not everyone agreed. Some fans poked holes in the storyline idea.
‘I don’t see Ned allowing Howland Reed to give up Lyanna’s son to Varys or Jon Connington,’ one person wrote. ‘The only way I can see this happening is if there was someone else at the Tower of Joy who took Griff away before Ned arrived.’
Whatever the truth, readers may have to wait a long time for confirmation. Author George RR Martin is still writing the sixth book of what is expected to be a seven-volume series.
