Joe Dempsie discusses why Gendry could be important for the Game of Thrones endgame

Game of Thrones has had a tonne of great characters, but there’s not many that have reappeared after a big break from the show. Gendry went rowing seasons ago and made a grand re-entry in Season 7. Now, let’s not forget, Gendry is the offspring of Robert Baratheon, the last (sorta) legitimate ruler the seven kingdoms had, and has as good a claim to the throne as anybody else right now, and he is in the endgame. Joe Dempsie, who plays Gendry, recently discussed his character’s potential importance, speaking to Watchers on the Wall at Con of Thrones. Read on!

First off, he talked about which pair he would like to see united in Season 8:

“Definitely the Hound and the Mountain. They’re either saving it for something epic, or it will be one of those things they won’t be able to fit in, but I’d really love to see it.”

Moving on, he discussed Gendry’s importance to the story:

“He’s sort of been a slow burner, hasn’t he? For the first few seasons, I was getting itchy feet for more of a purpose for him, because he was mostly just serving as a foil for Arya. But even with those scenes, there are little nuggets that are dropped that are quite subtle.

As the years go on, his potential significance [has become] more and more apparent, and potential is an important word. There’s a lot of elements of his character and his parentage that make him potentially powerful or dangerous, and he’s constantly learning more about himself. It’s almost impossible to know where he’s going to go now, based on both his ‘political’ clout, if he ever learns who he is, and his personality.”

He also talked about what Daenerys could do with Gendry, if she discovers his ancestry:

“I don’t know — marry him?

The thing about Dany that we’re seeing is her unpredictability now — you just never know what she’s going to do. What’s this quest for further power doing to her? Sometimes I don’t even know what she would do. She would just as likely marry Gendry as burn him alive.”

He also talked about the differences between Gendry and the other bastard, Jon Snow, and how Gendry had it much harder since he basically lived in the streets, while Jon had more of a proper upbringing.
