Queen Daenerys I Targaryen, also known as Dany and Daenerys Stormborn, is the younger sister of Rhaegar Targaryen and Viserys Targaryen, the paternal aunt of Jon Snow, and the youngest child of King Aerys II Targaryen and Queen Rhaella Targaryen, who were both ousted from the Iron Throne during Robert Baratheon’s rebellion. || On the night Daenerys was born on Dragonstone, a vast storm raged. For this reason, she is sometimes called “Daenerys Stormborn”. Her mother died soon after she was born, leaving her an orphan. As a baby, she was taken into exile in the Free Cities with her brother, Viserys, by loyal retainers, among them Ser Willem Darry. || Unbeknownst to Daenerys and the rest of her family, her oldest brother Rhaegar had another son by Lyanna Stark, who died shortly after giving birth to him. In her final moments, she revealed the true name of their son to her brother Eddard, who passed the boy off as his bastard son, Jon Snow, and raised him in Winterfell. Jon initially joined the Night’s Watch but later became the King in the North. || Targaryen Dynasty: Once a noble family of the vast Valyrian Freehold, an empire spanning most of the eastern continent, the Targaryens were given control of the island of Dragonstone in the Narrow Sea some centuries ago. After the obliteration of Valyria in the Doom, the Targaryens (Aegon/Visenya/Rhaenys) launched a devastating invasion of Westeros using three dragons to spearhead their attack. In a short period of time, six of the seven formerly independent kingdoms had surrendered to the Targaryen leader, King Aegon I, unifying the continent under his rule. The last hold-out, Dorne, joined the kingdom through a political and marriage alliance some two centuries later (Rhaegar/Elia Martell). || King Aegon I Targaryen, known as Aegon the Conqueror, was the founder and first king of the Targaryen dynasty when he conquered all of Westeros and united the realm (with the exception of Dorne and the lands beyond the Wall) with three great dragons, Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes. He was married to both of his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys. ||

The name “Valyria” is applied to several different locations and is used interchangeably, which can risk confusion. For clarity the word is used in the following ways:
The Valyrian Freehold: the formal name of the great Valyrian realm, which at its height stretched from Pentos to Meereen. Valyria was neither a kingdom nor an empire: theoretically, all of the freeborn landholders (“free-holders”) had equal say in government. In practice, this meant that it was essentially an oligarchy run by the wealthy noble families (there was no single emperor or king).
The Valyrian Peninsula: the large, wide headland extending south from Essos into the Summer Sea, the heartland of the Valyrian Freehold and the location of the city of Valyria. Partially destroyed in the Doom, with many islands formed and low-lying areas flooded.
The City of Valyria: the former capital city of the Valyrian Freehold, located in the middle of the Valyrian Peninsula. Often called “Old Valyria” after its destruction in the Doom.
The Doom of Valyria: the volcanic catastrophe which destroyed Old Valyria four centuries ago, and devastated much of the surrounding territory. Most of the Valyrian Peninsula has never recovered.
The Valyrian language family, separated into High Valyrian and numerous distinct dialects known as Low Valyrian.
Valyrian steel – a kind of metal used in making high-quality weapons, the secrets of whose forging were lost after the fall of Valyria.
