Welcome to A Song of Dan and Josh, the show where FanSided editor Josh Hill and I talk through every chapter of A Song of Ice and Fire, one at a time. I’ve read the books multiple times, Josh has only ever seen the show. What can we uncover when we look at these chapters with fresh eyes?
This week, we get into Jon VI, a fairly sleepy chapter about Jon Snow finally taking his Night’s Watch vows, and Eddard XIV, an explosive chapter where Ned tries to kick Joffrey off the throne only to watch his men get slaughtered before Littlefinger puts a knife to his throat. It’s a meaty couple of chapters. Let’s dig in.

Our topics include:
- Jon’s chapter gave us a lot of information on the religions of Westeros, particularly the Faith of the Seven and the Old Gods. How are the religions woven into the fabric of the story, and why are they more prominent in the books than on the show?
- Jon Snow is assigned to the order of stewards, and he is not happy about it. Happily, Sam is there to talk him off the ledge. How do these two work together?
- How is the Night’s Watch graduation like the Hogwarts Sorting Hat ceremony?
- Shifting to Ned, how did he get into the sticky situation in which he finds himself? We trace his missteps.
- Josh gets political, comparing the unexpected outcome of Ned’s takeover attempt to a recent election you may remember. We wade into controversy!
- I disparage/praise Cersei Lannister for being the absolute worst/kicking ass and taking names. What does she understand that Ned doesn’t?
Next week, we tackle the aftermath of Ned’s betrayal in Arya IV and Sansa IV. Tune in at 4:00 p.m. CST on our Facebook page!
