The series finale of Game of Thrones aired for the first time more than a year ago and immediately became one of the most divisive episodes of television in recent history. While some fans were pleased with how each storyline was brought to an end, others took issue with how some of the characters’ arcs wrapped up. In particular, many felt that the reveal about Jon Snow’s heritage was underutilized, insisting that he should have been the one on the Iron Throne at the end. Instead, after killing Daenerys, Jon was exiled to the Night’s Watch, where we last see him heading beyond the Wall with Tormund Giantsbane and some surviving wildlings.

But Kit Harington, who played Jon, disagrees. In a Q&A session on Twitter with @purple_dwagon, Harington explained his thoughts on the series finale and Jon’s fate:

When people say to me, ‘I wish you’d been on the Throne, or I wish you’d been with Dany on the Throne,’ I disagree because Jon’s place was always in the North. He’d never have been happy in the South. He’s like Ned Stark.

Harington also reiterated Tormund’s statement that Jon is a true Northerner, emphasizing that he “belongs North of the Wall,” saying he “could go on about this for hours.” Yes please.

And it’s hard to deny there’s some truth to Harington’s statement, as Jon himself even says that he doesn’t enjoy what he’s good at: ruling. Throughout the series, Jon is the primary example of someone who makes a good leader but doesn’t want the power and responsibility associated with it, so it’s difficult to see him spending years on the Iron Throne. There’s also little denying that he fits in much better with Tormund and the wildlings than he does with the Southern lords and ladies of Westeros.

But despite approving of how it wrapped things up — at least for his own character — Harington actually hasn’t seen the Game of Thrones finale. Maybe when you’re literally in it, the luster of watching it isn’t so great. Even so, we’ll take his word for it about Jon — if anyone knows the character, it’s him.
