Kit Harington recently sat down Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused Podcast and briefly discussed the Jon Snow spinoff show that is currently in development at HBO.
Although Horowitz tried to press him for information, Harington kept his cards close to his chest. “The only thing I’ll say is that I know nothing about it.” This is a call back to the famous line repeated by Jon Snow’s love interest Ygritte: “You know nothing Jon Snow.” Interestingly, the actress who played Ygritte, Rose Leslie, is now married to Kit Harington.
Horowitz continued to pry, pointing out that George R.R. Martin has discussed the spinoff on his blog. “George is allowed to talk,” Harington said. “I would be talking in riddles if I went any further.”
The Jon Snow sequel show was Kit Harington’s idea
Martin confirmed the existence of the Jon Snow sequel show on his blog after The Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd broke the news in June. In that post, Martin also confirmed that Kit Harington was the one who came up with the idea for the show, even bringing in his own showrunners and writers.
Details about the plot have been scarce to say the least. We can presume that the show will be a sequel to Game of Thrones and take place after season 8, but everything else is up in the air.
Personally, I don’t think this show is a good idea just because of the controversial events of the final season of Game of Thrones. And with House of the Dragon expanding upon the Prince Who Was Promised prophecy, I don’t see a clear roadmap on how to connect everything without retconning the original show. Perhaps there are plans to do that, but we will have to wait and see.
The Jon Snow show is one of several spinoffs in development. Others include The Hedge Knight, The Sea Snake, Ten Thousand Ships, and several animated projects. Martin has said he is involved with all of them. We don’t know if any will actually make it to air, but with House of the Dragon a bonafide hit, it’s definitely possible.
