“Game of Thrones” star Kit Harington says the last eight years on the show have been a dream.

As the HBO series wraps its upcoming final season, Harington tells Variety about the show’s complex female characters, what he’ll miss most about being a part of the epic fantasy, and the privilege he feels knowing how the series concludes.

“For all the arrows thrown at the show for its nudity and possible missteps that it made in female storylines, we were a show that didn’t just create ‘strong, powerful women,’” he said. “We were a show that created complex, difficult, real, fully-rounded female characters at the center of a story rather than the periphery.”

Although political resonance was never a main mission for the show, Harington says storylines’ focus on power made it more relevant over the past few years. “God, the world’s changed since we started the show. We’ve found a Joffrey at the head of one of the most powerful countries in the world.”

Harington goes on to say he feels a great privilege knowing how the series concludes and hopes its ending does right by the show’s fans. But he also doesn’t think the show ever really ends. “‘Thrones’ is never gonna completely go away and I really love that.”
