Game of Thrones might be over but we’re still not done obsessing over it.
Ruthless seafaring warriors plundering coastlines in their longships, noble families being slaughtered under a banner of truce, and a wall that held back barbarian hordes desperate for battle might sound normal for Westeros, but believe it or not this is all true of Scottish history .
George R.R. Martin drew heavily from history to create his incredible Song of Ice and Fire and next month Lauriston Castle are holding a special one-off event looking at the similarities between Martin’s world and real-life historical happenings.
‘The North Remembers: The History Behind the Game of Thrones ‘ is coming to the castle on Saturday 6 July and is set to be a must-visit for any Edinburgh fan.
Event host David C. Weinczok will be using the fictional world as a way to explore and understand the ebb and flow of Scottish history – character comparisons, battle tactics, geography, and beasts of lore are all a part of this crash course in Scotland’s story.
Known as ‘The Castle Hunter’ (he has visited over 400 in Scotland alone), David is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, a features writer for magazines including The Scots Magazine and History Today and is the author of the upcoming book The History Behind Game of Thrones: The North Remembers.
The event costs just £9 and includes a special tour of the castle, a chance to chat all things Game of Thrones and Scottish history with David and a helping of tea and cake.
Tickets are available via Eventbrite .
