Season 8 of Game of Thrones wasn’t for everyone. The season finale split the fan base in half. One was content with the ending, while the other demanded a season remake. Some blamed the absence of George R. R. Martin‘s next book series. Simultaneously, some blamed the showrunners’ heightened interest in launching a Star Wars feature film trilogy with Disney’s Lucasfilm. Actress Lena Headey who played Cersei had another ending in mind, that would have appeased both her and the fans.
How Lena Headey and Maisie Williams wanted Cersei to die
A lot of fans had issues with how HBO’s Game of Thrones dealt with Cersei towards the end. And it seems like Headey didn’t like it that much as well. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she said:

“I think all of us did, to be honest, because you start trying to write the story yourself. And [Arya Stark actress Maisie Williams] and I would fantasize about a Cersei and Arya showdown; that she would come back as Jaime. That was our dream. But they made different choices.”
Lena Headey doesn’t blame the showrunners for the controversial finale
Most of the Game of Thrones fandom points fingers at the showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for the divisive finale. Even Headey agrees that the ending could’ve been better, but she doesn’t blame them for it. She said, “I think in hindsight, everybody understands that. You’re in it, and you’ve been so invested, there’s a moment of, “Why?” But I absolutely get it.”
