Lewis Hamilton has joked that he will take his iPad into the cockpit with him at the Italian Grand Prix to try and keep entertained during any DRS train that forms.

The 7-time world champion is one of three drivers carrying ‘back of the grid’ penalties for Sunday’s race and so he will find himself starting at the wrong end of the pack needing to battle his way through.

He doesn’t sound massively optimistic over the progress he is going to be able to make, though, by suggesting that a DRS train is going to form around Monza and overtaking is going to be at a premium, with drivers instead forced to wait for tyre degradation and strategy to change things up.

We have a mixed up grid for tomorrow’s race and that would usually excite things but Hamilton isn’t so confident of a spectacle being produced:

“I hope I don’t get stuck tomorrow, but I’m imagining tomorrow that everyone is going to be stuck in a DRS train and it’s just going to be sitting there and waiting for the strategy, tyre degradation and those sorts of things to come into play.”

Indeed, Lewis went on to suggest he might take his iPad into the Mercedes cockpit with him to try and keep occupied:

“I was thinking of just taking my iPad with me in the race and when I’m in the DRS line just watch – there’s a new Game of Thrones out.

“I’ve stopped watching it because I like to binge-watch. There are lots of adverts in the middle and then you’re at the end and are like ‘I want to watch the next thing’.”

Hamilton’s comments do not suggest that a classic is on the way tomorrow at the Italian Grand Prix but hopefully he’ll be wrong in this particular prediction.

The slipstream effect around Monza, with the new cars, is not as great as it was and so overtaking might be a little more difficult, but there should hopefully still be opportunities going into the braking zones.

Time will soon tell as to what unfolds.
