Game of Thrones Season 8 is currently filming, and the stars seem to be taking time out now and then to give some teaser interviews. Today we have yet another from the guy with the best adjusted moral compass in all of the seven kingdoms, Ser Davos Seaworth, a.k.a. Liam Cunningham in our realm. Liam recently spoke to GQ about Game of Thrones, the end of it, and his hopes for Season 8. Read on!

He started off with speaking about landing the part on the show. He was apparently contacted to play another role, but he didn’t reveal which one. He recalled :

“They contacted me and said, ‘It’s dragons.’ And I said, ‘Stop right there.’ And they said, ‘It’s HBO.’ And I said, ‘Send me the script.’ I read the script, and the hair went up on the back of my neck. I ran back to my agent and said, ‘Get me in there immediately.’”

He was rejected for the role he originally auditioned for, but the showrunners had other plans for him :

“They said the old thing: ‘We’re going to go another way. But: We’ve got more characters coming in Season Two, and we want to see you.’ And I went, ‘Yeah, yeah. This is Hollywood letting me down politely.’ But sure enough, they came back.”

He then spoke about his former on-screen king, Stephen Dillane, who played the role of Stannis Baratheon. Stannis was axed off while Davos still survives, and it seems Liam misses working with him :

“I miss him. He’s an extraordinary actor. We would be walking around in the car park in circles, running lines. People would avoid us, thinking the pair of us were fucking mad, repeating this thing.”

Since Stannis’ failures resulted in him losing everything, Davos put his faith in the King in the North, Jon Snow, and apparently Liam has formed a similar bond with Kit Harington as he had with Dillane. Speaking of the show ending, he said :

“The amount of time I’ve spent with Kit Harington… it’s coming to an end, and we’ve been trying to prepare ourselves.”

Pages from Game of Thrones Season 8 scripts leaked!

He continued :

“My ambition was to get to the last season. I’ve gotten to the last season. Now my ambition is to get to the last episode. Whether I do or not remains to be seen, because I haven’t seen a script.

I’d love to be stuck in a room with Cersei, with her going, ‘Who the fuck are you?’”

Liam does not mince words, and he is determined about his choice of projects. Speaking of his time after Game of Thrones, he said that he would rather make something than be a part of something that didn’t excite him :

“I’ve spent a lot of years waiting for the right thing to come in—and now after Thrones, there’s a possibility that I could actually have a hand in getting something made.”

Well, we will certainly be looking forward to that. In the meantime, it remains to be seen what will happen to Ser Davos in Game of Thrones Season 8. He does seem like one of the people who could be a really good king, so we will be totally okay if all the major contenders to have a claim just seem to drop dead and Davos ends up on the throne.
