Given everything that has happened so far in Game of Thrones’ final season – not to mention the persistent speculation on everything that might still happen – surely no-one would have predicted that a misplaced coffee cup could’ve created such a storm.
Yes, last weekend’s episode The Last of the Starks became unexpectedly memorable for a production gaffe which saw a coffee cup being left on a table during filming before then somehow making it through post-production without anyone noticing.
While HBO have now digitally removed the cup from future screenings of the episode, the error will still continue to live on in all of our minds.
Liam Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos Seaworth, tried to explain coffee cup-gate during an appearance on Conan this week, where he brought the eponymous chat show host a cup that he claimed to have liberated from the GoT set.
‘I brought you a gift,’ he told Conan after presenting him with a Starbucks cup (which, as it has emerged, wasn’t actually the provider of said cup).
‘That was tricky to get. That’s what you’ve got there.’
Asked about the ‘scandal’, Cunningham joked that it was fine because ‘it wasn’t that pivotal a scene’.
‘The cup was more pivotal than the scene,’ he added.
Giving his take on the furore, Cunningham said: ‘These things happen, it’s a big job, people run in – and Emilia [Clarke] probably drinks too much coffee.’
And does he think Game of Thrones will ever get over this monumental moment?
‘I think the show survived it – just about.’
Yeah, he’s probably not wrong.
Game Of Thrones continues Sundays on HBO and Sky Atlantic.
