To avoid Slynt undermining his authority with his scheming, to separate him from his ally, Alliser Thorne, and in view of his experience, Jon Snow, now Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, decides to give Slynt command of the abandoned way castle Greyguard.

Still under the misapprehension that Jon’s youth and inexperience give him licence to do as he pleases, Slynt refuses to follow Jon’s orders, doing so the second time publicly. At this point, Jon, sick of Slynt’s insubordination and knowing either imprisoning Slynt or forcing him to go would only cause further problems, orders that Slynt should be taken to the top of the Wall and hanged, though Slynt remains arrogantly confident that Jon would not go through with the execution, threatening them all with Tywin Lannister’s retribution if Jon harms him, unaware that with Tywin’s death, he is making empty threats. However, Jon ultimately decides to follow the moral code that Eddard Stark had set his sons, and orders his men to fetch a chopping block so Jon can carry out the beheading himself, under the laws of the First Men his father had followed: namely ‘The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.’ With his head on the block, Slynt begs for mercy and says he will obey Jon’s orders, but Jon thinks “No. You closed that door”, though Jon is merciful and kills Slynt quickly. Stannis Baratheon, who watches the execution, approves of Jon’s behavior.

  1. We watched him cower with Gilley and little Sam when the battle for the wall was being fought. He’s afraid to lead and defend against an attack. He was safe where he was, or he thought so.

  2. Let´s face it, knowing who he was and after running in the wildling attack only Janos tought he have some allies in the Night´s Watch, he was dumb and that´s why he commited suicide via "Insult you Lord Commander mad Targaryen Stark Beheading Bastard"

  3. Know was supposed to be and is serous but how could you not laugh at this guy. Was there when Ned got beheaded saw him die with dignity , Janos does complete 180. Even Throne dies with pride instead of crying and saying am afraid like bitch.

  4. Janos: "You can stick your order up your bastards ass"

He was so ignorant that he didn't see how much he screwed up saying that, he only changed his mind on the chopping block, fucking moron deserves to die.

  5. This whimpering bitch killed a possible baby bastard of Robbert back in Kings Landing, shame he didn't die more painfully, i'd dangle him off the wall for a night or two the set him on fire and kick him off the wall =D

  6. You know, every time I watch this scene (which is a lot tbf, one of my favourites) I always try to figure out what Thorne is thinking. At first it was "….yeah no, he's Lord Commander, get yourself out of this one" but now I'm more thinking he's seeing it as a test for Jon, to see if he'll actually go through with it or back down, and that's why he steps aside… Anyone else?
