Game Of Thrones fans have compared Greater Manchester going into a third-tier lockdown to ‘The North Remembers’ reference in the series.

It comes after Boris Johnson failed to reach an agreement with Greater Manchester over a third-tier lockdown – meaning it would be forced into one.

The region will be forced into the toughest restrictions from midnight Friday, after failing to reach a deal with local leaders.

Following the announcement, many Mancunian’s took to social media where they shared ‘The North Remembers’ meme, a Game Of Thrones reference to the Red Wedding and how Robb Stark (Richard Madded) was killed by the Lannisters.

But it was actually Arya Stark (Maisie Smith) who said the infamous line in the episode: ‘When people ask you what happened here, tell them the North remembers…’

Taking to Twitter one fan said: ‘Oh Boris did you not learn anything from Game Of Thrones?’

Another commented: ‘I don’t normally still do Game of Thrones references, but this one fits).’

While one added: ‘Next time we see him outside Manchester City Hall, He will end his speech with “Winter Is Coming”.’

‘Has nobody in Downing Street ever seen Game of Thrones? Don’t they realise… The North Remembers,’ another tweeted.

Other fans compared Andy Burnham to the King Of The North (Jon Snow) who avenged the north from the southerners.

Tier three rules will see pubs and bars forced to close their doors for 28 days unless they are serving substantial meals, along with betting shops, casinos, bingo halls, adult gaming centres and soft play areas.

Only Liverpool and Lancashire had previously been placed under the most highest tier of England’s new ‘traffic light’ system.

Households cannot mix indoors or in most outdoor spaces, and travel into and out of the region is strongly advised against.

Greater Manchester will join the Liverpool city region and Lancashire under the highest level of the Government’s three-tier system.

The prime minister announced Greater Manchester will be awarded £22 million to support the region through the latest round of closures as part of a ‘comprehensive package of support’.
