House of the Dragon, the predecessor to Game of Thrones, is rife with morally ambiguous characters. Larys Strong, played by Matthew Needham, is undoubtedly on the darker side. He has been compared to characters like Littlefinger and Varys from Game of Thrones, but far more insane, cruel, and diabolical. Matthew Needham, who plays Larys, recently talked about his motivations in Season 2.

Matthew Needham says Larys saw the divide in Targaryens beforehand

Larys Strong is a character with more brains than brawn. He’s quiet and observes everything closely, and has spies all over the Red Keep. He saw the civil war coming from a mile away. In the Official Game of Thrones Podcast, Needham details how Larys had always been at odds with Rhaenyra:

“Yeah, I think he’s, like, the OG Team Green. I think he was Team Green before there was Team Green. If you– If you think about it, he sort of foresaw the fact, that there were going to be divisions, and there was going to be, you know, the people would not accept Rhaenyra.

That was pretty evident. I don’t think it’s a surprise that you first meet Larys in the episode where Aegon is born. I think that is… I think he could tell that that was probably looking like the better option. And so he gets in there with Alicent very, very early on to sort of get the ball rolling, really, early. So, yeah, I think he’s Team– I think he’s Team Green. For now.”

Matthew Needham discusses Otto Hightower, Larys, and Criston Cole

There has always been a debate about which character is the most cunning in House of the Dragon. And Needham has finally provided an answer in the podcast:

“Well, I think he’s less of a threat than Otto Hightower because most people are less of a threat than Otto Hightower. But Criston’s a dangerous person, of course, but I think there’s more of a potential to get around someone like Criston, and also, Criston is unpredictable, and you don’t know where he’s going to end up, you know?

He’s a dangerous person, and he puts himself in dangerous positions, whereas Otto is much more sort of careful about his own safety, you know? So, he’s more vulnerable, I imagine, than Criston Cole.”
