Natalie Dormer has defended on-screen sex scenes and has said that she saw no problem in the ‘real and dirty’ way they are aired.

The actress, who has appeared naked on screen for sex scenes in shows including Game of Thrones, hit back at those who thought her latest movie was too gratuitous.

Speaking to The Sun, Natalie backed Thrones and performers who have no issue in showcasing sex in its less than gracious and more natural forms.

She told them: ‘Sex and romance is a huge part of human motivation. So long as it’s informing the story then I don’t see the problem.’

Praising Thrones for its ‘natural’ interpretation of a sex scene, she added: ‘It’s not hyper-stylised. It’s not glamorised. And the sex is quite real and dirty as well. It’s about those raw, visceral qualities of human life.’

Natalie and her co-star Emily Ratajkowsi have come under fire of late after critics panned the film for showing too much unnecessary nudity, claiming it was too gratuitous and drew away from the film.

She also added that men can be just as objectified in sexual scenes as women do.

‘It’s not just men against women… Actors suffer from it, too,’ she said. ‘Wasn’t there a thing about Aidan Turner in Poldark? It’s a visual medium, so to a certain extent you get judged on the way you look.’

‘My personal experience has been to work on phenomenal jobs in which the men are objectified as much as the women,’ she added.

Speaking to The Guardian, she said: ‘Nakedness is a good equaliser and the shower scene also shows the tattoos on my character’s body and makes it clear she is not quite who you think.’

She added: ‘If the lead characters do not have a clear connection, then it doesn’t work… And on screen it has to be a physical connection between two broken people. That was my intention.

‘In a thriller the protagonists always have to join together somehow and sex represents that connection.

‘If you are being true to the genre, you have to show this.’

The plot itself follows to the tale of Dormer’s character,  a blind woman who gets wrapped up in a murder mystery when her neighbour Veronique (Emily Ratajkowski) suddenly dies.
