Nathalie Emmanuel has opened up on how her latest project The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance touches on racism.

The star is no stranger when it comes to approaching difficult topics in the world of fantasy.

And it appears her new character Deet, who is a Gelfling of the Grottan clan, struggles in the 10 part series after leaving her family to join the mission of saving Thra.

The 30-year-old spoke about how otherworldly shows allow directors to talk politics in ways real-life dramas can’t when chatting to Metro.co.uk.

She told us: ‘It’s an escape from the real world, but when you have the more grounded everyday shows, people we can see that as being real life and can relate to it.

‘We can reflect society and people’s issues back to them. It’s nice to have a spectrum of genres.’

The Game Of Thrones star added: ‘You have more permission to comment on things with fantasy.

‘People are removed from the world they’re in, so it’s a way to express a certain point of view and it’s easier for people to digest.

‘If it’s in a drama people would push back against it more.’

Nathalie went onto talk about Deet who joins her fellow Gelflings Rian and Brea in an attempt to stop The Darkening from talking over their world.

‘Deet experiences racism because of her clan,’ she explained: ‘She experiences some of these issues that she has never experienced before as she has spent her life underground with her people.’

The actress said: ‘And I guess that in itself is a lesson that it’s important to go out of what you know and see other people’s traditions because that’s how we unify.

‘And she does it and pulls through it.’

The 10 part series stars the likes of Taron Egerton, Simon Pegg, Shazad Latif and Hannah John-Kamen alongside many other Hollywood giants.

The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance is available to stream on Netflix.
