Do you like watching Netflix but wish it cost more? The company has you covered. According to CNET, the hugely popular streaming service, home to terrific genre shows like Stranger Things and Black Mirror, is testing out a new “Ultra” tier in parts of Europe.
At the moment, there are three tiers available to subscribers: Basic costs $7.99 per month and lets you watch on one screen (be it a TV, laptop, smartphone or whatever), Standard costs $10.99 and lets you watch on two, and Premium gives you four screens for $13.99. The Ultra Plan, which The Verge figures will cost around $16.99, also lets you stream on four screens, but in HDR video and 4k resolution. Queer Eye will never have looked so detailed.
But the Netflix Premium already lets you subscribers stream on four screens in Ultra HD (when available) — all the Ultra tier adds is HDR. Is that enough to justify a price jump? Maybe not by itself, but based on some of the promotional materials in Italty, Netflix may reduce the number of screens on which you can stream under the Premium plan from four to two. Now that’s value.
Netflix spokesperson Smita Saran weighed in: “We continuously test new things at Netflix and these tests typically vary in length of time. In this case, we are testing slightly different price points and features to better understand how consumers value Netflix.”
However they value it, I doubt they want to pay more money for it, but that’s a layperson talking.
