Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey stars in Netflix’s new fantasy show Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, which pays homage to Cersei Lannister’s most iconic moment.
For my money, the single best moment of Game of Thrones is when Cersei Lannister uses caches of hidden wildfire to explode the Sept of Baelor…while a lot of enemies are inside, awaiting for her to arrive for her trial for regicide. It’s iconic, spine-tingling, and makes excellent use of Lena Headey’s ability to look out cooly over a balcony with triumphant malevolence in her eyes.
It sounds like Guillermo del Toro, who’s been working with Netflix to create a series of shows known as Tales of Arcadia, is also a fan, since the newest show — Wizards: Tales of Arcadia — has a moment that definitely recalls Cersei’s pyromaniacal victory.
The first two Tales of Acadia shows, Trollhunters and 3Below, focused on trolls and aliens respectively. Wizards takes place in King Arthur’s Camelot, and goes full high fantasy. Lena Headey plays Arthur’s sorceress sister Morgana, who is determined to end his reign. In a scene from the fifth episode, Morgana has a changeling plant magical bombs all over Camelot. When ignited, they explode in green fire.
It’s hard not to see the similarities.
And it goes even deeper: both Cersei and Morgana are eventually killed by falling castle rubble. And there are a couple of other Game of Thrones alumni among the Wizards cast, including David Bradley (Walder Frey) as Merlin and James Faulkner (Randyll Tarly) as King Arthur.
I don’t think the Tales of Arcadia team ripped anyone off or anything, but it seems like they had Game of Thrones on the brain. If you’re making a fantasy show today, it’s pretty much impossible not to.
And frankly, anything that recalls Cersei’s finest moment is okay by me.
