Tom Kidd, known for his work on Martin’s Dying of the Light, focuses on characters from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in the 2026 A Song of Ice and Fire calendar. According to Westeros.org, the art explores the adventures of Dunk and Egg, the central figures of Martin’s novellas. The official description reads:

“Journey across Westeros and Essos with artist Tom Kidd, as we follow the adventures of hedge knight, Dunk, and his squire, Egg, inspired by their tale in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Featuring the pre-history of the bestselling series, as well as youthful glimpses of some of the older players in A Game of Thrones, here is the width and breadth of the Seven Kingdoms and Essos as you have never seen it before, full of majesty and sweeping vistas.”

Surprisingly, the calendar will also consist of scenes from Essos. This suggests connections to potential future stories or developments within Martin’s world. The depictions of Essos have fueled speculation about Martin’s future plans for Dunk and Egg to join the Golden Company, as speculatred by fansite Los Siete Reinos.

The Tales of Dunk and Egg explore the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg. These stories are prequels to the events of Game of Thrones, offering fans a closer look at Westeros’ history. Three novellas form the core of this series: “The Hedge Knight,” “The Sworn Sword,” and “The Mystery Knight.”

HBO’s adaptation, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will bring these tales to life. The first season focuses on “The Hedge Knight.” Future seasons may cover additional novellas if the show finds success. However, the inclusion of Essos in the calendar suggests untold stories beyond the existing novellas.

The calendar will release on July 22, 2025, which coincides with the expected premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
