Another day, another round of things to look forward to that arrive sometime after today. Let’s hit up the wide world of trailers.
Going in chronological order, the first stop on our tour is Monsters At Work, a New Disney+ series spun off from the Pixar movie Monsters, Inc. Billy Crystal and John Goodman return as Mike and Sully, two monsters who are fed up with their workaday lives of terrifying children, but they’re supporting cast members this time around. The main focus will be on keeping the terrifying monster industry running as it goes through some changes, from the points of view of some new characters voiced by new actors:
Monsters at Work premieres on Disney+ on July 2.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation is holding our for a hero
Next up, we have Kevin Smith’s reworking of Masters of the Universe, which picks up right where the original cartoon ended in 1985. “This is a continuation of that story,” Smith said. “We’re playing with the original mythology and characters, and revisiting and digging deeper into some of the unresolved storylines.”
Visually we also made the conscious decision to lean into the Masters of the Universe line of toys for inspiration as well. Mattel owns this entire vast library of that artwork, so right away we wanted the show to open with classic pieces of that artwork. Mattel has been committed to this look since they first started as a toy line in the ‘80s, and now we’re leaning into it and honoring it.
That’s a lot of words, but the show basically boils down to a big muscly guy fighting a skeleton man voiced by Mark Hamill. And the trailer is set to Bonnie Tyler’s ’80s classic “Holding Out For A Hero,” and there’s no way to be mad at that:
Masters of the Universe: Revelation is due out on Netflix on July 23.
Finally, 20th Century Studios released the final trailer for the long-delayed Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds as a video game NPC who becomes self-aware, and Taika Waititi as the malevolent game designer who wants to shut his world down:
Free Guy will at long last land in theaters on August 13!
