It’s now a matter of hours before Game of Thrones Season 8 officially drops. Excitement is running high, and so are theories about how it all ends.
Well, worry not. The GoT showrunners are here to help. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have helped create a new Spotify playlist to accompany the final season, and they claim the clue to the ending is hidden in it. The playlist is called Game of Thrones: The End is Coming, and was developed in collaboration with Spotify’s Head of Rock, Allison Hagendorf.
Spotify’s news site For the Record reports that the makers initially just wanted to share the kinds of music that have inspired them while writing and structuring the show, but in the process, the song choices started mirroring the conclusion. They told For the Record over email:
“The answer to the ending is one hundred per cent hidden in the playlist choices. No one will believe us, but it’s true.”
The playlist contains classic rock and metal bands such as Rage Against The Machine (Sleep now in the Fire), Danzig (Her Black Wings, Killer Wolf), Papa Roach, Led Zeppelin (Immigrant Song), The Doors (This is the End).
Contemporary artists and bands like Kanye West (Power), Missio (Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea), and Perfume Genius (Queen) also find a place. Adding variety to the mix are Johny Cash & Bob Dylan (Girl from the North Country) and Van Morrison (Listen to the Lion).
Benioff and Weiss say while the genres vary, all of the songs have an underlying connection in their depth and power. In their words,
“We were looking for songs that made us feel the way the show made us feel. There’s variety in there—[Rage Against the Machine] is not Johnny Cash. But they both have a deep inherent power.”
This is not the first Spotify playlist the showrunners have compiled. In 2017 they helped create Game of Thrones: Songs of Ice and Fire to accompany Season 7. Several songs from that playlist have been repeated in this one.
Music has always been a big part of the Game of Thrones world, with the freshly-dropped Season 8 soundtrack For the Thrones notching it up and an all-time high. With the new Spotify playlist, they have just upped the fun quotient as well. Whether fans will be able to recognize the clues is a matter of conjecture. But this will no doubt send us all scrambling over the playlist for them.
Happy clue-hunting, fandom!
