Helen Sloan has been the Principle Stills Photographer on Game of Thrones since the series’ humble beginnings way back in 2011. Recently, she created an Instagram account where she’s posting some of the favorite stills she’s taken over the course of the show’s seven seasons, with a bit of behind-the-scenes commentary added for spice. Let’s start our journey at the beginning, with a still from the very first scne of the very first episode, “Winter is Coming”:
It’s interesting that in Sloan’s photo, Will is on a white horse, while in the actual scene for the show, he and his fellow rangers Gared and Ser Waymar Royce are all riding black mounts.
Next stop on memory land: Tyrion Lannister, before he got his facial scar in the Battle of the Blackwater:
And season 1 Jaime was there:
“Held og lykke” is Danish for “good luck.” Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has been nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor, his first-ever! We’re pulling for him to win for his performance in “The Spoils of War.”
On the other side of the Narrow Sea, Sloan honors season 1 Daenerys:
Never forget: Hodor in his glory days, back before Isaac Hempstead Wright’s growth spurt made it impossible for Kristian Nairn to lug the kid around on his back:
Here’s a group of wildlings trekking across the frozen hills and mountains beyond the Wall in season 2:
“Eg elska þig Ísland” translates to “I love you, Iceland,” because how could you not?
Next, a big honking close-up of the incomparable Jack Gleeson as King Joffrey Baratheon:
“Never did a nicer fella play a meaner maniac.” Gleeson, a vastly underrated actor, will always be remembered for his role as the brat king. “Jack to Joffrey in 2.1 seconds!”
Finally, Kit Harington as Jon Snow in the Battle of the Bastards:
“Kit is one of the hardest working chaps I’ve ever met. Take after take after take. And I’ve never seen a bloodier crew than at the end of ‘BOB’ – Such good craic.” For those wondering, “craic” is a term for entertainment and fun. Basically, she’s saying that filming the Battle of the Bastards was a good time; and not you know.
We’re looking forward to seeing what else Sloan uploads as season 8 draws near and we have a whole set of new photos to pore over.
