House of the Dragon actor Olivia Cooke appeared recently at the Power Women Summit along with Aimee Lou Wood (Sec Education), Xochil Gomez (Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness), Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus), and Tommy Dofrman (I Wish You All The Best).

The actress spoke about hopping on Twitter after the show had aired to see reactions to her performance and the character. Seeing as her character was often at odds with the protagonist, Rhaenyra, Twitter was at its signature worst. Cooke explained how much it bothered her that fans were picking apart her character on the show with vitriol.

“People are so mean but that’s the thing…no one has anything nice to say,” said the actor. “No one who goes and has the gumption to commit thoughts to a tweet has anything nice to say. So I was a bit depressed and didn’t want to leave the house for a little while.”

This has been a growing concern on social media as the line between actors and characters has begun to blur. Actors have repeatedly faced such vitriol over social media for the characters they have played.

The House of the Dragon actor will return in Season 2 of the show and it will be interesting to see how the showrunners handle some of her most pivotal moments. Cooke’s performance as Alicent Hightower was universally praised in House of the Dragon and solidified her as one of the brightest members of the cast. Alicent will have an even more significant role to play in Season 2 of the show as the tension and scale ramp up.
