We’ll soon be setting sail once again on the Revenge! Variety reports that HBO Max has renewed Our Flag Means Death for a second season. Season 1 of the half-hour pirate comedy aired on the platform in March and was generally well received by critics and fans alike, with many eagerly waiting to see if the show would return. Despite buzz and several #RenewOurFlagMeansDeath movements on Twitter, HBO Max kept quiet…until now.
The half-hour pirate comedy stars Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet, a hapless British noble who decides to abandon his life of leisure to become a feared pirate. But the pirate life doesn’t exactly come naturally to Stede, who would rather kill his enemies with kindness and replace all the books he steals from them with ones he’s already read. The show really starts to take off once Bonnet meets Ed Teach, aka Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). The two begin an arrangement where Teach teaches Bonnet to be a better pirate while Bonnet teaches the fearsome Blackbeard some of the intricacies of the noble life.
Through their adventures, the two fall in love, though the season ends on a cliffhanger where all seems in jeopardy.
HBO Max renews Our Flag Means Death at the top of Pride Month
Our Flag Means Death gained a lot of acclaim for its LGBTQIA+ representation. The show’s not as outrageously hilarious as you’d expect with talent like Darby and Waititi attached to it, but makes up for that by being surprisingly thoughtful and heartfelt.
In addition to its two leads, Our Flag Means Death also stars Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Samson Kayo, Con O’Neill, Nathan Foad, Vico Ortiz, Kristian Nairn (who played Hodor on Game of Thrones), Matthew Maher, Guz Khan, David Fane, Nat Faxon, Samba Schutte, and Rory Kinnear. The first season also had guest appearances from comic heavyweights like Leslie Jones, Fred Armisen, Kristen Schaal, Nick Kroll, Tim Heidecker and Will Arnett.
No word yet on when season 2 of Our Flag Means Death will begin filming or release. For now, we’ll just have to be content with the knowledge that it’s the pirating life for us, yo ho.
