There are very few actors in Hollywood who know how to make a death scene memorable. Game of Thrones alum Sean Bean has been called the King of on-screen deaths. But his GOT co-star Pedro Pascal might not be that far behind, who is collecting traumatic death sequences like infinity stones. Pascal’s character, Joel, died in the recent episode of The Last of Us, and he compared it to his Game of Thrones scene.
Quick read:
- Pedro Pascal’s knack for dramatic deaths – Fans compare his roles to Sean Bean’s famous on-screen endings.
- Joel vs. Oberyn—Pascal’s comparison – Both characters met brutal fates, and Pascal joked about enjoying the golf club scene.
- Fans horrified, episode highly rated – Despite the shocking nature of Joel’s death, it became the series’ highest-rated episode.
Who had a worse death, Joel or Oberyn?
Pedro Pascal’s characters often have a distinct flair. Joel and Oberyn Martell shared a few similarities. For one, his characters can’t seem to keep their heads safe! In an interview with EW, Pascal compared the two and how they died,
“I get killed a lot, I like to die. I think this [Joel’s] is the best one. No, it’s in competition, I think, with Game of Thrones. It has to be. I love the golf club. I’m going to start golf.”
While Pascal had a lot of fun filming the scene, fans were left horrified. Though it was anticipated, the episode became the highest-rated for The Last of Us yet.

How did Joel die in The Last of Us?
While on patrol with Dina, Joel encounters Abby, who is secretly seeking revenge for her father’s death at Joel’s hands. Abby pretends to need help, luring Joel and Dina to a lodge where her group is waiting. Once inside, Abby reveals her true intentions. She shoots Joel in the leg, ensuring he suffers before delivering the final blow. In a gut-wrenching moment, she beats him to death with a golf club, all while Ellie watches helplessly.
Joel’s death is a pivotal moment in the series, setting Ellie on a path of vengeance. The show makes some changes from the game, such as Dina being present instead of Tommy and Jackson being attacked by infected during the chaos. These adjustments add more emotional weight to the scene, making Joel’s demise even more devastating.
His death reshapes the narrative, pushing Ellie into a darker, more complex journey of grief and revenge. It’s a moment fans won’t soon forget.
