Pedro Pascal went from an unknown actor to a global phenomenon, and it all started with a self-shot iPhone audition that looked more like a casual video call than a ticket to fame. Long before The Mandalorian helmet or The Last of Us, Pascal was just another struggling talent trying to carve out a space in Hollywood.
His big break came when he landed the role of Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, thanks to a vertical, poorly lit audition video that lacked any professional finesse. With no team, no studio setup, and only the encouragement of close friend Sarah Paulson, Pascal’s talent shone through. That simple yet powerful tape convinced HBO’s casting team he was perfect for the swagger-filled Prince of Dorne, changing his life forever.

When HBO set out to find Prince Oberyn Martell for season four of Game of Thrones, they needed someone with magnetic charm and commanding presence. Showrunner David Benioff explained to Variety:
That was such a tricky role to cast. Oberyn entered the story mid-stream, but required the swagger of a character who had been sparring with the other players off-screen for years.
Pascal was far from a household name then, but his natural confidence stood out. Benioff recalled:
First of all, it was an iPhone selfie audition, which was unusual. And this wasn’t one of the new-fangled iPhones with the fancy cameras. It looked like sht; it was shot vertical; the whole thing was very amateurish. Except for the performance, which was intense and believable and just right.
Sarah Paulson’s Push Helped Pascal’s Talent Reach HBO
Pascal’s audition might have been overlooked if not for the support of Sarah Paulson. Her encouragement and connections helped get his tape in front of HBO’s casting team. Though the video lacked technical quality, Pascal’s gripping performance made all the difference. His portrayal of Oberyn Martell, with equal parts charm and danger, cemented him as a fan-favorite character and opened the floodgates for his Hollywood success.
Pascal’s unlikely audition success story was further supported by longtime friend Sarah Paulson, who ensured his tape reached the right eyes. His portrayal of Oberyn became iconic and propelled him into roles like The Mandalorian and The Last of Us. Now, starring as Mister Fantastic in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, directed by Matt Shakman and produced by Kevin Feige, Pascal commands a flagship MCU spotlight.
