Ed Sheeran made an appearance on Game of Thrones during the Season 7 premiere and it soon turned into a nightmare for him as many fans of the show showed their displeasure over his role. Sheeran had a very small role in the episode, which included just two lines, apart from the “Hands of Gold” song that he was singing during the scene. The showrunners had been trying to get Ed Sheeran to play a cameo on the show for a long time as actress Maisie Williams is a big fan of his and they wanted to surprise her by letting her share some screentime with Sheeran. Sheeran finally revealed how he felt about the backlash he received for his infamous cameo.
He appeared in the Armchair Expert podcast for Monday’s episode where he talked about how fun it was to cameo in the hit HBO series.
“It was great,” he said of the day’s shoot. Not so great, the reaction to his cameo. “I feel like people’s reaction to it sort of muddied my joy to it,” he admitted.
Sheeran cameoed as a Lannister soldier in the first episode of the seventh season, titled “Dragonstone.” He and Williams shared a short scene around a campfire.

Ed Sheeran got a lot of hate for his cameo in Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 1, “Dragonstone”. Fans weren’t too happy with the choice to cast the pop idol as a Lannister soldier. In fact, his brief appearance seems to be the most hated scene of the season so far. Sheeran even shut down his Twitter account after the episode, although he later claimed that his choice to leave Twitter was coincidental.
The Grammy-winning singer (and occasional actor) dropped by the Armchair Expert podcast for Monday’s episode where he talked about how fun it was to appear in the HBO cultural staple series, and how he felt about the backlash.
Sheeran also revealed a previously unknown secret about Maisie Williams’ character in Game of Thrones, Arya Stark, which might come as a shock to several fans. “She’s always been awesome,” Sheeran said of his friend, Williams. “I don’t think they had written the ending yet. It was meant to be her last season but it wasn’t. And as a surprise for her, [they got] me on. So, she was meant to turn up on set. and I was by the fire.”
Does this mean someone else was going to kill the Night King? Was it Jon Snow? Was it someone else? Arya’s death in Season 7 would have surely changed the ending of the series in a big way. What do you think? Tell us in the comments below!
Game of Thrones star Kit Harington rose to fame with his role Jon Snow, and has become a household name ever since. Harington has come a long way ever since, playing iconic roles in several anthology series, and is recently making headlines with his role in the upcoming MCU movie Eternals. Game of Thrones fans are doubly excited for the film, as Harington and his on-screen brother from the HBO fantasy Richard Madden (Robb Stark) both play an important role in the film. Harington owes it all to his time on Game of Thrones, as it prepared him for a great future ahead.
Talking to Variety for an exclusive interview, the Game of Thrones star said, “I saw [“Game of Thrones” co-showrunner] Dan Weiss the other day. We had coffee, and I was saying to him, and he said to me — well, I won’t say what he said to me, but he felt similarly. But what “Thrones” enables you to feel is a sort of freedom. I did the thing, you know? It’s cool, I’ve got that. I have freedom now that I’m going to enjoy whatever it is I do.”
“It’s not that I don’t have ambition, but I have a kind of happiness that if things go well, great. If they don’t, I did that thing. So that’s where I’m at. And I feel that what something like being part of the Marvel Universe enables you to do, like “Thrones” did for me, is that you have this thing that you hopefully return to and can develop. And on the side, you can do all sorts of things that are the polar opposite. A little movie with no budget. Or the next thing I’m doing: I’m going off and playing “Henry V” in London in one of my favorite theaters. And this allows me to do that.”

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been largely successful in wooing its audience, breaking records in terms of popularity, viewership, and box office earnings. The latest installment to the ever sprawling cinematic universe is soon to hit the silver screen, and fans are already hyped up about it. When it comes to TV, no other franchise has been as big and successful as HBO’s Game of Thrones. And very few actors have been lucky enough to be a part of both, and Kit Harington ranks amongst them.
The shift to the MCU is certainly a big step for the Game of Thrones star, however, his work ethic doesn’t seem to have changed. Talking to Variety, Harington explained, “Nothing really, majorly surprises me after going through those eight seasons of “Thrones.” It was as big as anything gets by the end, as far as scale goes. But moving into Marvel, it is a different beast, in more subtle ways than you’d imagine.”
“What I like about the differences for me about these two things is I get to have lightness of touch in this, which I think is really important. It’s what I really loved about the Marvel movies — those little moments of kind of lightness, comedy, in amongst everything. And I saw a few opportunities for that with this character. Having played a majorly central part of a different show who was not comedic or light in any way whatsoever, not being the center of attention in this show and playing something that’s a little lighter was kind of fun.”
