Peter Dinklage has laughed off the ‘third Targaryen’ fan theory he kinda fuelled.
Game Of Thrones fans claim there’s another Targaryen sibling in response to a line Daenerys hears in a vision that goes: ‘The dragon has three heads.’
Tyrion, Dinklage’s character on the show, has been the frontrunner for the mystery Targaryen – the son of Aerys II Targaryen and Joanna Lannister – and the actor got fans very excited with his acceptance speech at the Emmys.
Collecting his award he gave a shoutout to co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, calling him ‘My brother from another mother’.
Fans of the hit HBO show think he was referring to Tyrion’s brother Jaime (played by Nikolaj) and that it was his way of confirming there is a third Targaryen.
He quizzed about his comment when he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show, but quickly poured cold water on the Tyrion Targaryen idea.
Talking about the fan reaction to his speech, Peter said: ‘I love all of that.
‘I like to think that I would be smart enough not to just blurt out spoilers in front of the four viewers of the Emmys.’
So there we have it, it wasn’t a confirmation of the theory, although you never know. He didn’t say an outright ‘no’…
The actor previously admitted that he had ‘concerns’ about playing Tyrion.
Speaking backstage at the Emmy Awards, he said: ‘I had concerns about this genre, I wasn’t familiar with the books or the complexity of Tyrion before this because unfortunately before this character, many times people my size weren’t interesting enough for me to be interested in doing it.
‘I had done it one or two times before and it sort of didn’t you know, grab me but they relieved my concerns very quickly.’
Since wrapping up on set, Peter said he found it hard to say goodbye to a character he ‘adored’.
‘I had my last day on set in July, just over two months ago now and it was very sad.
‘This is not only a great TV show to be a part of, but it was an enormous family to be a part of.
‘I’m sure you’ve heard that before from actors but in this case I was far from home, I live in New York and we shot the show in Europe, so many times I had to stay there and couldn’t go home on the weekends and I really developed deep roots in the community of Ireland and some of the other countries we shot in.
‘It was definitely hard to say goodbye, because it wasn’t just saying goodbye to the show, I was saying goodbye to a life over there.’
