After a relatively quiet stretch, it seems Game of Thrones season 8 news is coming at us faster than Gendry made it back to the Wall. We learned earlier this week where the opening scene of season 8 would take place, and now courtesy of Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) we might have learned how much longer the cast and crew will be filming. Speaking with Variety, Dinklage revealed that season 8 is “about halfway through filming.”
It’s the final season, and it’s a long one so we’re taking our time.
Season 8 filming began near the end of October 2017, which according to Dinklage’s estimate would put the conclusion of filming sometime in March or April. That doesn’t quite line up with previous estimates of filming concluding in the summer of 2018. Of course, Dinklage did say “about halfway,” which could mean anything. It’s also unclear whether Dinklage was referring to the filming schedule or the amount of scenes filmed, the former of which could include filming breaks which would extend the schedule.
Either way, with the show coming to an end, Dinklage agrees with various fellow cast members including Sophie Turner (Sansa) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) in believing the time is right. “It’s time. Storywise, not just for all our lives. It’s the perfect time to end it. Sometimes shows stay on a little too long, the jumping-the-shark thing.”
The last thing we would want is for Game of Thrones to jump the shark. More importantly, just because the cast believe the time is right for the series to end, doesn’t make it any easier on them, including Dinklage.
It’s bittersweet when it’s time to move on with everything. It’s always the sad part of our business, because you get pockets of great people for short amounts of time and then you have to move on and it’s always heartbreaking. Especially when you’ve spent more than a couple months with people.
We imagine Game of Thrones has more than its fair share of “short amounts” of time with your favorite actors. We’re looking at you Pedro Pascal. You beautiful man.
