Hollywood has an embarrassingly poor track record when it comes to adapting anime properties for the silver screen. And if the negative reaction to Ghost in the Shell is anything to go by, that’s not likely to change anytime soon. Hollywood hasn’t abandoned their attempts to find the right approach to anime remakes, but some of the stuff is just too weird for western sensibilities…

  1. Please Hollywood just stay away from anime and manga in general. You just don't get either. I was not a gigantic fan of SOA (first half of season one was good the second half though…) but why the hell are they making a RL US version of it? No need at all. They already butchered DEATH NOTE, Ghost in the Shell and Fist of the North Star. I have read somewhere Battleangel Alita is next. Why oh why….

  2. While I agree that translating Prison School into a Hollywood movie would be damn near impossible… it's not as graphic as you're implying it to being. Plus, you made one mistake with that commentary: saying it has elements of Fifty Shades of Grey. There's no way someone with a quarter of a brain would make that kind of comparison. Fifty Shades is among the worst written books of all time, and every copy should be burned and deleted from existence. Prison School is nowhere near Fifty Shades; it's further off the reservation.

  3. Why the hate for Ghost in the Shell? After watching the Arise Episodes i think the movie was good. I even watched the original anime movie again afterwards and it still leaves me more confused than the new movie. Some people should just not be overwhelmed by nostalgia everytime something from their childhood gets renewed.
But most people also just joined the "whitewashing" bandwagon of hate. In a world where everybody claims to be "open minded" there are a lot of people with prejudice.

You should watch the live action of attack on titan, that was horrible to watch.
Lets see if Alita will make a breaktrough. Im still not sure why she is the only one with big eyes in the movie but i will still give it a chance.

  4. Death Note was too twisted for Hollywood as well. Should have never been compressed into a movie. A whole bunch of good stuff was left out that made the plot more solid and the characters more developed. They chopped it all up just to fit into a movie time frame. They tried to ride on the unprecedented situation of "being able to kill someone by writing their name down in a book" and totally left out all the mind games Light and L played against each other, as well as the awesome deaths that came with them. If they were going to murica-washit, they should have just at least made a netflix series instead.

  5. I am all for it that japanese content never arrives to americunt, ever, it's literally two separate worlds, plus look at anime, the only surviving art form of our era, showing us every possibility…

  6. Hollywood understood that 100 bad movies will produce the same revenue as 1 great expensive one, but at a fraction of the costs! Nothing is controversial for Hollywood if they can make money out of it. They simply care more about the money than the art!

  7. Edger Wright & Stephen Chow, because these 2 will openly embrace the absurd. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is something that would have done very well in Asia cinema, yet it wasn't even allow to come. Hollywood studio exec has not understanding of the cultural difference.

  8. How come when you make an American live action adaptation of a anime/manga why is white washing a problem should we start complaining about Japanese movies staring only Japanese people or every media outlet in Asia only staring Asian people
