The mystery of who Anakin Skywalker’s “true father” is has been an ongoing debate for 20 years, but it looks as if we finally have an answer.

In 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, we learned that Anakin, who would later become Darth Vader, did not have a true father. His mother, Shmi Skywalker, told Qui-Gon Jinn that she had birthed Anakin on her own. It was a confusing scenario, but in Revenge of the Sith, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine revealed that one can create life by manipulating The Force.

The scene from the 2005 film led fans to believe that there was no immaculate inception, and Palpatine instead simply manipulated The Force to create Anakin.

According to Screen Rant, that’s exactly what happened, as revealed in the new comic Darth Vader #25. In the comic, Vader tries to stop a hole between the realm of The Force and real life from opening, and in the process, he relives some of significant moments of his past.

One moment shows Vader watching his mother during her pregnancy, with Darth Sidious’s arms surrounding her, forming the energy inside of her that would eventually emerge as Anakin.

Of course, there’s some dispute over whether or not the comic is canon, but it is a satisfying confirmation for those who’ve theorized this happening for more than a decade.
