Not long ago we learned that, towards the end of shooting on the final season of Game of Thrones, HBO filmed a reunion special featuring cast members new and old, all of them reflecting on what the show has meant to them and how it’s changed TV. Filmed as the curtain is falling on this part of their lives, it promises to be a very emotional, cathartic experience, for fans as well as the cast members themselves.

We know that Sean Bean (Ned Stark) will be part of the special; he’s the one who first revealed that it existed, after all. And if I was a betting man, I’d say Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) is involved, too, given that he was seen hanging around Belfast during shooting. But one person that won’t be involved is Richard Madden (Robb Stark). “I didn’t do any of that,” Madden told Entertainment Weekly. “I was [filming] Rocketman so I wasn’t able to do that.”

Rocketman, FYI, is a biopic about Elton John. Madden plays Elton’s manager and lover John Reid. So if you want to blame anyone for Robb missing the Game of Thrones reunion, blame Elton John.

Anyway, that’s a shame, although we’re sure the reunion will be memorable regardless. In my opinion, a far bigger issue is that HBO isn’t making the special easily available to the public but rather bundling it with a (probably very expensive) complete series boxset to be released after season 8 is over. But that’s another story.
